Artist Spotlight: Ryan Barnes

Ryann Barnes is an experimental pop artist and songwriter based in Los Angeles, currently rolling out new music she’s worked on over the course of this past year and hinting at an upcoming project.

Q: Tell us about yourself!

A: I grew up in Northern California and have always been involved in music one way or another. Early on my intro to music was through my grandmother. We would sit and watch old movie musicals on VHS tapes and I still feel very inspired by that era of film in its aesthetics and soundtracks. My mom also put my brother and I in piano lessons but I found guitar when I was 13, which prompted me to start writing my own songs, and it's what I use to write these days for the most part.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of making/writing music?

A: I feel like in the past year I have been lucky enough to meet new collaborators who truly feel like a well of inspiration. That’s really what's most rewarding right now, is seeing a lot of my visions come to fruition and to be able to hear songs we make that feel so extracted from my mind and self.

Q: What is the inspiration behind your songs?

A: There are so many pockets of inspiration that I find in everyday life and will just jot down in the notes app, and a lot of the time it is very random phrases or ideas I hear

There is a song I am about to release that came from my collaborator Joseph talking about “daisy chaining” chords in his studio to record something we were working on, and it led to a song called ‘Daisy Chain’ that has nothing to do with chords at all.

Another song I have released ‘Words You Can Twist’ was inspired by someone else who I had spoken to about realizing you’ve become someone different than who you were before, but funny enough it’s a recurring feeling I struggle with and I was able to write about that as well in the song.

Q: What goals are you working towards right now?

A: I feel really excited to share these songs, some that I’ve teased already and even songs I’ve written within the past week that will eventually see the light of day. I also plan to be play live as much as I can this summer, and I have some really exciting shows planned already so I can’t wait

Q: What three songs do you think capture “you” the best for a first-time listener?

A: So many people inspire me. My friends inspire me, my parents, my brother, and then of course my musical influences. I’m currently very inspired my Bjork’s Debut album and No Doubt after seeing them perform in Vegas recently, but the music I listen to jumps around a lot but I find that a good pop song never gets old so I always return to albums like Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen and Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

Q: What song do you currently have on repeat?

A: I recently saw No Doubt perform in Vegas and their song ‘Hey Baby’ is just so fun I love it

Q: What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

A: I actually used to distribute my songs on CDs at school, that were typically about my dogs
